Monday morning started early with a 20 minute ride in the taxi to the train station. Once there we grabbed some breakfast and boarded the train headed south to Aix en Provence. It was almost a three hour train ride that led us through the French countryside.
After taking some time getting our rental car, we headed South to Cassis, France, on the Mediterranean. We drove past Marsailles which didn't impress us much. The part that we went through seemed quite dilapidated and rundown. Lots of graffiti.
Cassis is a quaint little resort town. The streets are narrow and steep. We had quite some time maneuvering especially since initially Judah didn't know how to use reverse on the rental car :). Dave would open his door and use his foot to move us backward. It was pretty crowded as the day we were there was a holiday. We finally found a parking spot and walked into the town. Got some lunch and bought our tickets for a boat ride through the calanques (water inlets).
This is a picture of the Med and the main part of town.
Looking out from the town toward the sea. The light house and the docks.
I believe this was the first of the calanques that we visited on our boat tour. The water was pretty shallow and very turquoise.
This lady spent the entire boat ride in this pose, even when the wave and water came splashing over the edge of the boat! It wasn't the warmest day either! She must have really been enjoying herself!
They said that some of the world's best rock climber's come to this part of the world to climb- where the rocks drop right into the water.
Since I had to wear my glasses, and it was bright out, Dave bought me this hat to wear (yes, this is a picture of Keslie wearing it). The hat was passed around from person to person and I didn't even end up wearing it on the boat ride as it was too windy!
Some of the boats in the harbor.
A picture of Cassis from the boat looking back towards land.
France has lots of carousels! Seems like on every street corner.
The beach.
Not sand but smooth, round rocks.
A fun sculpture out by the lighthouse.
Dave and I on the wall out by the light on a stroll after our boat ride.
Me providing an image of what Judah's hair was doing in a picture.
Just a quaint house on the sea front.
The lighthouse door with the boys.
Dave now sporting the hat.
Some fun local digs.
An example of a narrow street....
Isn't this such a cool fountain?
A picture back on the boat.... see our friend in the back?
The four of us on the boat at the end of our tour.
Judah's turn with the hat.
Dave's turn
Love this place!
Tall boy, little green door!
My shirt made me camouflage!
That night we drove back to Aix en Provence and completely enjoyed our darling hotel that Dave found for us there- Hotel Cezanne. It was older but newly remodeled. Aix was a nice town with wonderful little streets that came together with fountains and lots of gathering restaurants. Totally adorable. We ate dinner, walked forever to find some gelato then crashed for the night. Wonderful day!
